How to Hang Pictures in an RV
One of the questions we’re asked most is: How do you hang pictures in an RV?
This was one of the first issues we faced moving into our RV full-time. It was important to us to display pictures in our RV, to surround ourselves with sentimental memories. Additionally, we have created several gallery walls in our RV, and in general - wall hangings and pictures are an element of our RV decor that we simply just enjoy.
While there may not be a one-size-fits-all answer, our solution is easy and has worked for us for over three years of RV living and travel.
When it comes to hanging pictures in an RV, there are two primary methods. In this post, we share both options to display frames in an RV, and we will share the list of tried and true supplies that we use.
Two Ways to Hang Pictures in an RV
When it comes down to it, there are two basic options to hang your pictures in an RV.
1: Using Adhesive or Velcro strips
2: Using traditional methods, combined with Adhesive or Velcro
But why would you combine the two? Trust us, read on.
1 | Using Adhesive or Command Velcro strips to hang pictures in an RV
One of the easiest methods that most RVers swear by to hang pictures in an RV is to use adhesive or Command strips.
Our personal preference: Command Velcro strips.
What I like about Command Velcro strips is that you can literally hear the strips as they’re connecting together.
Pros of Command Velcro strips:
Damage-Free: Strips are removable and when used properly, they do not cause permanent damage
Come in various sizes to support a variety of weights
Cons of Command Velcro strips:
Cost: If you like to hang pictures in your RV like we do, the cost of using Command strips can add up quickly
Not the best solution for heavier frames or wall hangings
Tips for using Command Velcro Strips to Hang Pictures in an RV
Two tips that I have learned from using Command Velcro strips to hang RV decor and picture frames:
Use multiple strips: My personal preference is to use one strip on all four sides of the frame. (1 - top, 1 - bottom, 1 - left side, 1 - right side). For heavier or larger frames, you may want to use 2 on each side.
Cut to size: For narrow or thin frames, I will cut the strip lengthwise down the middle. When doing this, I typically increase the number of strips used overall. This way, I am balancing the overall supported weight.
Bonus: If you are hanging pictures over peel and stick wallpaper in an RV, you will want to allow for additional cure time. I apply the Command strips at least 2 days before I add the weight of the decor. Once it is installed, I do not move the frame or decor for at least 2 more days. This will help reduce the chance of the peel and stick wallpaper pulling away from the wall.
Additional adhesive options to consider:
Aside from Command Velcro strips, there are several other Command products to consider, in addition to mounting tape or museum putty. We personally have not used museum putty in our own RV decor, but have heard that it can be useful for very lightweight decor, like posters. we have used these other adhesives - however, they can be a bit more difficult to remove over the Velcro.
2 | Using nails or hardware to hang pictures in an RV
This second method is one that we try to avoid at all costs, but depending on your specific needs, sometimes it is unavoidable. RV walls are notoriously mysterious. They are thinner than normal residential walls. They don’t have the same series of expected studs or framing, and they are likely housing a lot of wires, pipes, and ducting in a very condensed space. The worst part is - if you make one wrong move or use a screw that is just this much too long, you could find yourself literally screwed. As in, finding the other end of the screw poking out the side of your RV.
So, if you absolutely have no other option other than to use a nail, screw, or anything that puts a hole in the wall of your RV, do so at your own risk. Note, that depending on the make and model of your RV, you may be able to locate blueprints to find specifications for your walls, to help you decide where to hang RV decor.
Securing pictures and RV decor for travel day
Now, I mentioned that my second option was the traditional method with adhesive. Here’s the thing: If you hang pictures in an RV, you probably don’t want to add “take down photos and pack them away” to your departure day checklist.
So, if you choose to hang your RV decor with a nail or screw, we also recommend additionally securing them with Command Velcro strips. This will ensure that they don’t swing back and forth while you are driving, or come loose and fall off the wall completely. The nail may help offset the weight of heavier frames, but the Velcro can help hold it into place.

Supplies to Hang Pictures in an RV
RV decor must always take into account weight and mobility.
To help maintain the weight of our decor, I prefer using frames made of lightweight materials like plastic instead of glass. When searching for 'poster frames', I usually come across some great options for such frames. Opting for lightweight frames also makes it easier to prepare for travel days, because they are easier to secure in place, so we don’t have to take them down each time.
